URBAN FABRIC TRANSIT | MYTHS

Walkable Places: Spruce Hill, Philadelphia

philly3.jpg (85441 bytes)

This picture shows a neighborhood of West Philadelphia which was developed in the 1890's, a period of rapid expansion of streetcar lines. The streetcars still run today; one can be seen on the left hand side of the photograph. Although this neighborhood is primarily residential, it also has shops, schools, parks, and two universities within walking distance. The well-designed urban fabric and quality transit services have ensured that this neighborhood has retained a healthy mix of races, ages and income groups.
