| High-speed
trains are categorized as those with a top speed in excess of 150mph. The first trains to
fit this category were the Japanese bullet trains in the 1960s, and since then networks of
high-speed lines have been built in and Europe and Asia. The first high speed trains in
the USA, running between Boston and Washington, debuted in December 2000. Engineers in
France and Germany are working on the next generation of trains with top speeds of up to
240mph. For distances up to about 300 miles, high speed rail can be faster than air
travel, in addition to being cheaper, more comfortable and much more efficient. |
